RKW wins Tarmac Supplier Innovation Challenge

Net Zero Carbon Cement Bag offers sustainable solution - Mannheim, 29 September 2021 - The RKW Group has won the Supplier Innovation Challenge of the cement manufacturer Tarmac. The decisive factor for the success was the sustainability performance of the Net Zero Carbon Cement Bag, which is based on the ProVent solution. Tarmac is one of the leading sustainable building materials, road construction and building products companies in the UK.

The production of cement generates around 2.8 billion tonnes of CO2 worldwide - that is almost eight percent of all emissions. The contribution that the industry can make to achieving the climate goals is correspondingly large. Reason enough for Tarmac to call on its suppliers to take part in an Innovation Challenge. The goal here, too: Identify ideas that can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions.

A total of 174 business partners of the British company from different industries took part in the challenge. In the end, however, the clear winner was RKW's Net Zero Carbon Cement Bag. "Thank you so much for taking part in the Challenge. We really appreciate it. We learned a lot from it," says Mark Beech-Griffiths, Category Manager Tarmac Building Components.

Several factors were decisive for the success. On the one hand, the proportion of recycled material in the production of the FFS bags was increased to 50 percent and additionally so-called Green-PE was used, which has a positive CO2 balance - without any loss of quality. Secondly, ProVent is completely recyclable after use. And finally, the fact that only energy from renewable sources has been used in production itself since 2020 also contributed to the success.

The success in the Challenge also becomes a business success for RKW, because the Net Zero Carbon Cement Bag is manufactured at the Echte site. "We are very proud that our innovation has been so well received by our customer Tarmac. This award encourages us to continue investing in sustainably better products and solutions," says Xavier Bories-Azeau, Director Sales Industrial Packaging.
